In October 2019, Louisiana was one of six states selected by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) to be a part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) Employer Coverage Learning Collaborative. This cohort pilot opportunity was made available to a limited number of employers that expressed interest in, and readiness to, offer the National DPP lifestyle change program to their employees as a covered medical or wellness benefit.
Well-Ahead Louisiana’s Diabetes Prevention team partnered with Gilsbar, LLC and the Franciscan Missionary of Our Lady Health System for this pilot, providing guidance and technical assistance as needed. Based on our partnership, both organizations’ systems are now offering the National DPP as a wellness benefit to their employees at no cost. The programs began in-person, but recently moved to a virtual/distance learning setting due to COVID-19.
This Collaborative is an encouraging step toward improving and increasing coverage for the diabetes prevention program as a medical and/or wellness benefit by more employers who see the return on investment from chronic disease prevention.
