The CHOP Program, inspired by the West Virginia State University “FASTRAC” program aims to empower youth to make healthier eating choices and to equip them with the skills necessary to successfully navigate a kitchen. This 8-session program targets middle school age youth and teaches them the skills necessary to prepare healthy meals at home. The recipes prepared in the sessions show youth they can still eat their favorite foods and be healthy just by making a few small changes.

Students learn basic cooking techniques like knife skills and safety, food safety, proper measuring and calculations, meal planning, boiling, simmering, sautéing, and baking.  Students also learn useful nutrition information like the importance of consuming enough fruits and vegetables, how to lower intake of fat, sugar and sodium, and proper portion control.

Classes are held at the Ochsner North Shore Cafeteria. Please call for the most current class schedule.
