University Hospital & Clinics (UHC) was recently named an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), a National Accredited Organization (NAO), certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This will allow people with diabetes in and around Lafayette increased access to high-quality diabetes education services.
Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) is a critical element of care for people with diabetes. DSMES is the ongoing process of facilitating the knowledge, skills, and ability necessary for diabetes self-care, as well as activities that assist a person in implementing and sustaining the behaviors needed to manage his or her condition on an ongoing basis, beyond or outside of formal self-management training.
To be eligible for DSMES, a person must be diagnosed with diabetes and be referred by a healthcare provider. Most payers, including Medicare, Medicaid and commercial, cover 10 hours of initial training over 12 months.
